Education

Masters of Fine Arts, Dramatic Writing University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. May 2011. Bachelors of Arts, History North Central College, Naperville, IL. June 2006. College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Level 3 Master Tutor, December 2010

Experience

• I draw upon my diverse academic background as well as my professional experience to not only create a strong, malleable learning environment, but to also build solid relationships with the students. • As a tutor, I worked with a wide array students and subjects ranging from traditional college students in English 100, to non-traditional students taking remedial classes, to Ph.D candidates in Molecular Biology. I pride myself on my ability to work with all levels of college students from varied disciplines. • Well versed with standard computer applications, expert in Word and Excel. Proficient in WebCT, Blackboard, and other, similar educational software. • Lead workshops on thesis creation, cover letter writing, paper organization, brainstorming techniques, script writing, story analysis, and resume creation. • Guest taught several classes including Theatre Appreciation, Beginning Playwriting, and Advanced Playwriting. While many MFA programs concentrate exclusively on the artistic tract of the degree, the University of New Mexico requires a fairly rigorous academic component, focusing primarily on Performance Studies. I was also allotted the opportunity to TA Theatre Appreciation, which put me in front of 150 students, three times a week. For two and half of the three years I attended UNM, I worked as a writing tutor at the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), which is the university’s tutoring center. Working at CAPS allowed me to become and maintain Level 3 Master Tutor certification with the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), their highest certification. I worked with a variety of students at all levels of competency ranging from those enrolled in remedial classes to those pursuing Ph.D.’s. I also have extensive experience in working with ESL/non-native speaking students and non-traditional students. I can offer a unique perspective and skill-set when it comes to working with a wide array of students, and I am confident in my ability to not only convey the academic material, but to also effectively communicate with the students. I believe it paramount that students come first, and I have the both the drive and proclivity to help each and every student, regardless of background or experience.

Hobbies

Being an artist and a student of a creative writing (plays and screenplays predominately), I wasn't sure if I was cut out for tutoring college writing. Thankfully, I was. Getting involved with CAPS (the University of New Mexico's tutoring center) was both a great experience and a great job. My artistic side wound up being a huge benefit in my tutoring. It allowed me to think outside of the box and help some the students other tutors had difficulties with.
